Feline Hunting -The Competition Between Two Cats

** Author Note ** I wrote this post early this month. I’ve been holding it because I didn’t feel comfortable using any of the public domain images I could find on this topic. Feline hunting? Unless you’re a cat person, don’t Google that one. If your cat hasn’t brought you a trophy, you haven’t seen those images and you don’t want to.

I decided to just use images representing the two cats involved in this story and leave it at that. My Freyja Kitty and Loki Boy are characters in and of themselves. I think these images are all I need. 🙂

My Freyja Kitty went hunting tonight, and decided to bring her prey inside before killing it…. again.

The chef’s specialty tonight? A very young squirrel — yae! Not even a juvenile. This would be a squirrel equivalent to Veal, so we call it “Squeal”…

…which is exactly what it did when Freyja came in the dog door with it tonight.

It had already been injured and I couldn’t save it. And I didn’t know how to quickly put it out of its misery. So, I picked it up by the tail, picked up the cat, and put them both outside together.

The hunt continued as I shut the door and turned away……

Freyja Kitty

After boring of her play, our great hunter decided to bring her prey up near the back door. Knowing she can’t bring it inside, this would be her safe space to eat her prize. Now that she’s done, she’s laying outside with her kill, crowing loudly with her mews, telling all cats who can hear, “Look at my kill! It was the purrrrrrrffect hunt.”

And this kill is mine. I did this. And you can’t have it.” And she contentedly curls up near it.

Inside, I have a male cat that doesn’t get to go outside. He knows the dog door has something to do with getting in and out. He just doesn’t understand how that works. This pleases me. But tonight, he sits at the dog door, and looks out the window. He sees Freyja with her kill. He hears her song through the dog door and he is consumed with one thought. One thought only. He must take Freyja’s kill.

I deserved it! I am the GREAT LOKI!!!

It should have been mine!

It would have been mine if they would ever let me go outside!

I must take her kill!!!!!!

Hmm… I wonder if Freyja sings her song for all cats, or to torment Loki, alone?

We Marched!

Last week, on January 21st, over 50,000 women, men, and children, gathered in Austin, TX to march for their human rights. It was a beautiful day in Austin. It was HOT, but that didn’t stop any of us.

Just to get a perspective of the crowd, here’s a few people at the Texas Capitol building:

at-the-capitol

This was my first march, and it won’t be my last. I found it … inspirational. Joyous. I reveled in the togetherness of the crowd. And I finally felt like I’d taken a step towards doing something and making a stand!

When I got back home last week, I wrote a poem, as I’m prone to do…

Cities, worldwide, took one day to come together
One day to make a stand

One day…
To march

In a world of division
Over 50,000 people gathered that Saturday
In Austin, TX
Women, men, children…
Ages, races, religions, genders
People from all walks of life
All came together with one purpose…
To march

We all had so many causes to march for:
Women’s Rights
Healthcare
Planned Parenthood
Roe v. Wade

Just to name a few…

Someone asked me why I wanted to march…
Why on earth wouldn’t I?

This is why I march.
I march for you, little sister!
I don’t know if it’s your choice, but you HAVE that choice
and no Politician
or Preacher in his pocket
should ever take it away from you.

I march for you…
Too traumatized to speak of what happened.
You shouldn’t be punished
by being forced to carry
one more reminder
for nine months.
Sister … it wasn’t your fault.

I march for the parents
Who found out in those last few weeks
something went terribly wrong!
They should not be forced into someone else’s decision.
They, too, have a choice!

We march for all of us!
We march for our rights!

And those who marched with me cried
TELL ME WHAT DEMOCRACY LOOKS LIKE!

WE are what democracy looks like.

Symbolism

I’ve always enjoyed watching commercials. When I was a child, it was because the commercial jingles captured my attention. As an adult, I like to identify symbolism used in a marketing campaign. You know, those visual or audio queues (or combinations of both), used to gear a commercial to its target audience. All ad campaigns use these techniques, but it seems the easiest to identify and the most amusing are the ads for Erectile Dysfunction.

We all recognize this image, don't we?
We all recognize this image, don’t we?

My favorite is a Viagra ad they’ve been showing, lately. You know, that new one with Kelly Hu? This commercial must be popular because they’re playing it all the time.

Kelly Hu Viagra Model

I couldn’t help myself. Everything was right there in front of me. The symbolism was so blatant! Subliminal? HA! There is nothing subtle about this ad, much less subliminal. Let’s get started, shall we?

You have the water imagery. It’s not a two-bathtub reference, but it is a very nice poolside/lakeside shot. The line of the water is a soft, flowing line, similar to the line of the fabric in Kelly’s dress. In contrast, the lines of the deck, umbrellas, and everything “wood” are straight, hard and rigid.

In fact, the lake house, itself, continues the symbolic reference with the hard wood as the commercial shows shots from both inside and outside the retreat.

Trust me… the wood in this house is staying up for longer than 4 hours.

All of this symbolism, I get. I understand. I even understand why they chose Kelly Hu for this ad. Do a Google search on her modeling career. She’s pretty hot.

But someone please answer me this… Why the lighthouses?

A sense of melancholy

Magickal ScentsFestival season is finally over. Usually, by this time of year I’m just glad to see that it’s done so I can rest, but not this year. Yes, I was exhausted by the end of faire, but I felt a sense of melancholy. I finally got a taste of what it was like to run my own shop and I loved it. Magickal Scents was a huge success and I’m looking forward to doing more festivals. I’ll also return to Texas Renaissance Festival next year!

I made a closing weekend update on my website at TempestMysticProducts.com.  Follow the link to see a gallery of pictures and upcoming festival dates for 2015.

This is the first weekend I will have had at home where I get to do nothing. I’m not quite sure what to do with myself, so I find myself cleaning like a mad woman. But now that festival is over I’ll try to start writing more over here again.

Happy Holidays, everyone!!!!

A lengthy absence

I’ve had a bit of a lengthy absence since my last post. But if you follow this link, you’ll see why I’ve been so busy. I have much to celebrate right now, but no time to party (and little time to write) until after Thanksgiving. I will try to keep you updated as I can, but for now the majority of my content has to go towards my Tempest site. If any of you are in the Houston area, I hope you can make it out to Texas Renaissance Festival! Drop by Magickal Scents and you’ll get to meet this insane woman people call “Duch”. 😉

Writer’s Paralysis

Writer’s paralysis. It’s not quite the same as writer’s block. With paralysis, you have so much stuff in your head to write about, you don’t know where to begin. You pick up your laptop, open up your program of choice, and you’re faced with the blank page. You can’t pick just one thing to start with. There is no gentle flow of writing or a coherent flow of a story. There is no river of creativity flowing from you. If you write, the dam will break and the flood will come forth. Chaos will ensue and all you will have is … the wreck that was in your mind. No one will understand. Possibly, not even yourself.

My son writes. He showed me this tool to get past the paralysis. I hope it works. It’s a website that doesn’t allow you to see what you’re typing. You can’t backspace, either…

… That was the beginning of a lengthy entry I wrote on July 6th. I decided not to post it because the rest of the entry contained a lot of very personal information (everything going on in my head right now causing writer’s paralysis).

But the tool my kid showed me was amazing, and I want to share it with everyone. As writers/bloggers, we all run across writer’s block or writer’s paralysis every now and then. When you can’t figure out what’s causing it or you can’t see a way around it, this should do the trick. Just sit down and start “blind typing”, and regurgitate whatever is in your head. Eventually, something will come out.

Happy writing, and I’ll see y’all again soon!

Another Year Comes to a Close

Tomorrow is New Years Eve. it seems time passes faster and faster with each year. I can’t believe 2013 is already coming to an end and 2014 is on our doorstep.

There is a website I visit every year to both see my year in review and to create an inspiration for the upcoming year. Wordle is a fun way to create “words of art”, or, Word Clouds, using a blog or website that uses RSS feed or using your own text. I highly recommend having some fun with it this week. 🙂

Mother’s Mirror

It is never easy to stand by
While your child makes mistakes…
Stumbling through life’s lessons…
We stand helplessly by, knowing this is the only way to learn.

But it is hardest when we watch
And see our own mistakes…
Our own stumbles…
We want so badly for you to listen, but you already “know”.

And we know. We remember.
We, too, were there, once…
We had to stumble and learn for ourselves.

Many times you’ll hear us wish
“If I could go back to my teenage self and say…”
Followed by sage advice we can never give, please remember,
There are times you are truly our mirror.
Your mother can’t go back in time to that teenage girl to
Impart these words of wisdom earned from life’s experience.
So she tries to make a better life
A better future
A healthier experience
For you.

The urge to write

I want to write today. I so desperately want to write today. I’ve been so busy and it’s been so long since I’ve been here. I feel as though I’m going to explode because I have so much inside of me but I don’t have time to just sit down and get it all out.

I just have this moment.

This moment, when my head is killing me and I feel like I’ve been run over. I just want to lay down and sleep because the last day of August decided to attack my sinuses.

Maybe I’ll have time tonight… :: grumbles ::

On Challenging Old Concepts and Catholic Guilt

I’m not sure if I’ve written about it over here yet, but I have this creative streak that seems to have turned into a business. I make incense and blended oils. I love what I do, and my house smells amazing!

That being said, with my line of blended oils, I’ve been known to do custom blends. These oils are used for aromatherapy or for wearing on the skin, so my requests may vary.

Yesterday I received what has to be the strangest request yet. I received a request for Holy Water.

“You have this ‘Cleansing Sage Mist’; I was wondering, can you make Holy Water?”

I was raised Catholic. I haven’t been to confession in over 30 years and I doubt the church would consider me as being Catholic now (I don’t), but the Catholic guilt never leaves you. The first thing that crossed my mind was, “Isn’t there someone a bit more qualified?” Followed by, “Won’t I go straight to Hell for making that, much less, selling it?”

Off to the Google I went and not only did I find a few recipes for Holy Water, I found there are different types of Holy Water. Most religions that use it follow the same basic recipe but they use a different blessing. The Catholic Church has three different types alone, for different occasions. The type we are most familiar with is the one they keep in the stoup, found as one enters the church. This is the basic recipe, made with distilled water and a bit of sea salt.

The blessing I found to be most interesting. Up until the Second Vatican Counsel (referred to as Vatican II), the church used the traditional Roman blessing to consecrate the water. This was a powerful and fascinating read. They actually performed an exorcism over the salt and the water, making it pure and “exorcising the evil” out of it. It was a lengthy ritual, of course.  Vatican II was 1959-1965. During that time they changed the blessing making it much shorter. It’s no longer an “exorcism” over the salt and water, but after reading the new version, IMO, it does seem to do its job.

I’d found the recipe and the blessing. I now had my moral dilemma. Sister Nora would sternly disapprove and would be highly disappointed. She would tell me I should not be so sacrilegious and I should go to confession immediately for even thinking of doing such a thing.

But Catholics don’t have the exclusive on Holy Water, and I’m not Catholic anymore. Besides, my label wouldn’t say, “Catholic Holy Water.” Another thing that crossed my mind; if this customer wanted Holy Water from the Catholic Church, she would have gone to a priest. In my research I confirmed they do still give that out to parishioners.

Anyone can say a prayer…

I went for it.

I went for it

Sister Nora, I’m sorry. When I was 7 years old, grasping the concepts of God, forgiveness, and following the right path, I asked you about people who weren’t Christian and said, “What if we’re wrong and one of them are right?” I know you probably gave me the answer you thought best at the time, but I needed something more than, “You shouldn’t be so sacrilegious.” I kept questioning as I got older and got to the point I believe all these different spiritual paths lead to the same Deity. There are just too many similarities in their beliefs to think otherwise.

So can anyone make Holy Water? Sure. Will the Catholic Church recognize it as such? No. But I believe in sanctification and I believe it is something any of us can do.

As for selling it? You know, I don’t feel right selling the water itself. I do have packaging involved so I have to put some kind of a price on it. If that means I’m going to Hell; well, at least I’ll be in good company. All my friends say they’ll be there and Mr. Magick Man says he already has the ice concession.
